CBP Facility Codes Leaked via Quizlet Flashcards in Latest Government Security Breach
Sensitive security information about US Customs and Border Protection facilities in Kingsville, Texas, was publicly accessible on Quizlet for weeks through flashcard sets apparently created by CBP personnel.
The "USBP Review" flashcard set, available until WIRED contacted a potential user on March 20, contained specific door and gate codes for CBP facilities, detailed information about the agency's 1,932-square-mile area of responsibility, and descriptions of an internal system called "E3 BEST" used to record and investigate checkpoint referrals.
The exposure comes amid a rapid hiring surge at CBP, with up to $60,000 in recruitment incentives available to new agents. Similar Quizlet searches revealed flashcard sets potentially linked to ICE and DHS containing detention standards, transportation procedures, and even answers to an insider threat training assessment.
CBP's Office of Professional Responsibility is reviewing the incident. A spokesperson said "a review should not be taken as an indication of wrongdoing." Quizlet said it takes reports of sensitive content seriously and encourages users to report concerning material.
The incident underscores how rapid government hiring expansions can create new security risks when new personnel inadvertently expose classified procedures through public study platforms.
