Elon Musk has announced plans to build a Terafab chip fabrication plant in Austin, Texas, jointly operated by Tesla and SpaceX. The facility aims to produce chips for robotics, artificial intelligence, and space-based data centers.
The Vision
Musk outlined plans for Terafab to produce chips supporting:
- 200 gigawatts per year of computing power on Earth
- Up to 1 terawatt of computing power in space (via SpaceX's orbital data center plans)
He stated: "We either build the Terafab or we don't have the chips, and we need the chips, so we build the Terafab."
The Reality Check
Building a chip fab is among the most complex industrial undertakings:
- Cost: Tens of billions of dollars
- Timeline: Many years to operational
- Equipment: Requires highly specialized machinery (ASML lithography systems, etc.)
- Expertise: Musk "has no background in semiconductor production"
- Track record: Bloomberg notes his "history of over-promising on goals and timelines"
Why Now

- RAM crisis: Memory prices are surging as AI data centers scale
