Free Claude Max for (large project) open source maintainers
Anthropic offers its $200/month Claude Max 20x plan free for 6 months to open source maintainers of projects with 5,000+ GitHub stars or 1M+ monthly NPM downloads.
The Offer
Anthropic is providing free Claude Max subscriptions (normally $200/month, 20x usage) to qualifying open source maintainers:
- For projects: 5,000+ GitHub stars or 1M+ monthly NPM downloads
- For maintainers: Must be a primary maintainer or core team member with commits, releases, or PR reviews in the last 3 months
- Capacity: Up to 10,000 contributors accepted
- Duration: 6 months
- Review: Rolling basis
If You Don't Quite Fit
Anthropic explicitly invites maintainers of critical but less visible ecosystem dependencies to apply anyway: "If you maintain something the ecosystem quietly depends on, apply anyway and tell us about it."
Why It Matters
This is a significant investment in the open source ecosystem. Claude Max's high usage limits make it genuinely useful for code review, documentation, and development tasks on large projects. The 6-month duration gives maintainers enough time to evaluate and integrate AI assistance into their workflows.
Similar programs from other AI companies (GitHub Copilot, Google) exist, but Anthropic's approach of targeting large-project maintainers specifically recognizes that the biggest impact comes from helping the most widely-used projects.
