HP has launched HP IQ, an AI layer embedded in new business laptops that combines a local OpenAI-powered LLM, in-person meeting recording, and proximity-based file sharing. The product raises significant privacy concerns around covert meeting recording.

What HP IQ Does

Three Components

  1. AI Chat: Based on OpenAI's gpt-oss-20b, can analyze documents and help with tasks
  2. Meeting Agent: Records in-person meetings via laptop microphones, generates action items and summaries
  3. NearSense: Proximity detection for file sharing and automatic meeting room login

HP's Response

HP product head Matt Brown: "HP recommends that anyone recording their coworkers should follow best practice and ask all meeting participants for permission first."

The Register notes: "If you attend a meeting in which someone is recording you with HP IQ, you won't be aware of it unless you can see their screen."
