Chinese entertainment conglomerate Huayi Brothers has disclosed over 56.4 million yuan ($7.7 million) in overdue bank debt, with 34 corporate bank accounts frozen and the entire shareholding of founders Wang Zhongjun and Wang Zhonglei seized by judicial authorities.

The Shenzhen-listed company, once China's most prominent film studio with blockbuster hits like "Assembly" and "If You Are the One," revealed that 229 million shares — 100% of the Wang brothers' holdings representing 8.26% of total shares — have been frozen. The company's largest shareholder retains just 7.86% combined control after a planned judicial auction of 11.3 million additional shares.

The debt, which exceeds 10% of the company's 2024 audited net assets, signals a deepening crisis for a studio that symbolized China's entertainment industry boom. Huayi's struggles mirror the broader challenges facing China's film sector, including shifting audience preferences, regulatory pressures, and the rise of streaming platforms.

The Zhihu discussion about Huayi's troubles has reached 456 million views, reflecting intense public interest. Commenters have noted the irony of the Wang brothers building China's entertainment empire only to lose it through debt and mismanagement.

The company warned that the low controlling stake could create governance instability, though it noted the second-largest shareholder holds no board positions, minimizing immediate operational disruption.
