OpenAI Acquires TBPN: Tech Media Startup Becomes Part of AI Giant's Strategy
OpenAI has acquired TBPN (Technology Business Programming Network), a daily live tech talk show that The New York Times recently described as "Silicon Valley's newest obsession." The acquisition signals OpenAI's ambition to own not just the AI technology, but the conversation around it.
What Is TBPN?
TBPN is a daily, live tech talk show hosted by entrepreneurs Jordi Hays and John Coogan, airing weekdays from 11AM–2PM PT. The show covers tech news, AI developments, and builder culture in real time. It has rapidly become one of the fastest-growing media companies in tech.
The network reaches audiences across X, YouTube, Spotify, Apple Podcasts, LinkedIn, Substack, and Instagram.
Why OpenAI Bought a Media Company
OpenAI's Chief Marketing Officer Fidji Simo explained the rationale:
"The standard communications playbook just doesn't apply to us. We're driving a really big technological shift. With our mission to ensure AGI benefits all of humanity comes a responsibility to help create a space for a real, constructive conversation about the changes AI creates."
Key motivations include:
- Owning the narrative — Rather than relying on external media to cover OpenAI fairly
- Audience access — TBPN has built a loyal audience of tech builders and decision-makers
- Marketing expertise — TBPN's team will also work on OpenAI's broader communications strategy
- Real-time feedback loop — Direct channel to understand what the builder community thinks
Editorial Independence
Critically, OpenAI has pledged to maintain TBPN's editorial independence:
"TBPN will continue to run their programming, choose their guests, and make their own editorial decisions. That's foundational to their credibility, and it's something we're explicitly protecting."
Whether this independence survives long-term remains to be seen, but the explicit commitment is notable.
TBPN's Perspective
TBPN co-founder Jordi Hays acknowledged the shift:
"While we've been critical of the industry at times, after getting to know Sam and the OpenAI team, what stood out most was their openness to feedback and commitment to getting this right."
Strategic Implications
This acquisition is part of a broader trend of AI companies investing in media and content:
- AI companies need to educate markets about their technology
- Traditional media coverage has been inconsistent and sometimes hostile
- Owning media channels provides more control over messaging
- The line between tech company and media company continues to blur
TBPN will sit within OpenAI's Strategy org, reporting to Chris Lehane.
