Zhangxue Racing Makes History: Chinese Manufacturer Wins WSBK World Championship Rounds
Chinese motorcycle manufacturer Zhangxue Racing has achieved a historic milestone at the WSBK World Superbike Championship in Portugal, winning both rounds of the WorldSSP middleweight class.
The Achievement
Rider Valentin Debise piloted the self-developed 820RR-RS race bike to victory in both rounds, winning by a commanding nearly 4-second margin. This represents the first-ever victory for a Chinese manufacturer in the WSBK championship.
The Machine: 820RR-RS
The 820RR-RS is entirely designed and developed in-house by Zhangxue Racing, representing Chinese engineering capability in high-performance motorcycle development.
Founder Zhang Xue's Management Philosophy
Following the victory, founder Zhang Xue disclosed the company's distinctive compensation system:
Dual Annual Salary Review
- June-July general adjustment: Covers 90% of employees, ~10% raise
- Year-end merit review: Covers top 20-30% performers, raises up to 30-50% or even 100%
Bottom 10% Elimination
The remaining 10% of employees do not receive raises and face elimination — a "rank and yank" approach that Zhang Xue says has elevated engineer salary levels in the Chongqing area.
Significance
This dual victory represents:
- Chinese manufacturing evolution: Moving from volume production to high-performance competition
- International validation: Beating established European and Japanese manufacturers on the world stage
- Engineering talent: Demonstrating capability in complex mechanical engineering
- Brand building: Racing success as a marketing and technology validation strategy
