The Change
Google has clarified that the opt-out status for installing apps from unverified developers will carry over to new devices, meaning users only need to go through the 24-hour wait once in their lifetime.
How It Works
- Attempt to install an app from an unverified developer
- Android enforces a mandatory 24-hour delay
- After the delay, permanently allow installations from unverified developers
- This permission now survives device upgrades
What Hasn't Changed
- ADB unaffected: Power users can still install immediately via ADB
- Play Store unchanged: Only affects manual APK installation
- Verified developers: Apps from participating developers install normally
Google stated the goal is protecting vulnerable users from malware. The 24-hour default provides a safety net while the permanent opt-out respects power user needs.
For most enthusiasts, the sideloading controversy is effectively resolved — set it up once and forget it forever.
